Hello! My name is Patricia Adaya and I am a senior at Yale University studying Global Affairs. I took a class during the Spring 2022 semester called ‘CPSC 184: Intellectual Property in the Digital Age’. It was taught by Professor Cecillia Xie and Teaching Fellow Daria Rose.
I took the class because I wanted to learn more about intellectual property — what it is, how it relates to technology, and how it can help people. When I went into the class, I didn’t know what intellectual property was, nor I could really visualize what exactly it meant. I had heard words thrown around like copyright, trademark, or patents and I didn’t really know what it all meant beyond a surface-level understanding. Throughout the class, I got to learn about copyright, Fair Use, trade secrets, patents, trade marks, moral rights, and more! We really delved into the nuances of it all by studying case history. I took away a lot of things from the class, but I always found myself thinking how cool the class was and how I wish I could share this information with people. Knowledge like this should be available to all, especially small artists who could really benefit from the information.
I set out to create this website for my final project, and I plan to keep it up for a long time. I hope that it will serve as a valuable resource to all who are looking to navigate the intellectual property space but don’t know where to start.
